Centrally located in Vermont, the site for the Cottage in the Woods is situated on a dramatic upland site with active streams and commanding valley views. The landscape is perched on the edge of a wooded ravine that slopes steeply around the property on all sides. Existing site elements, including an exposed rock ledge and historic hedgerows were preserved, reworked, and incorporated into an arrangement of shifting and sliding rectangular forms that establish the spatial framework of the garden. Site stonework, including walls, terraces, and stream channels, reflect the verticality of the site while anchoring it to the hillside.
