Cairn Orchard
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Focusing on vernacular landscape elements as the underlying design approach, a sense of gracious space and procession for a 465 acre multi-use recreation facility in rural western Pennsylvania was created. The entry sequence to the popular facility was reorganized along a terraced apple orchard and colonnade of proportionally-spaced Tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera). An underused and disconnected parking area was transformed into a contemplative field of stone cairns - a wonderfully introspective place amidst the many other social activities taking place on the property. In addition, vehicular and pedestrian circulation routes were simplified and other landscape improvements were made following SBLA's Landscape Master Plan.
